Harvest and Harmony

A Historical Fiction Novel by Deborah Arroyo Romero

My book, Harvest and Harmony, is a historical fiction story that follows three families from Cerro, New Mexico, who come to live and work on the Colville Ranch near Del Norte, Colorado, in the early 1940s. Although these families come from different backgrounds, they find common ground through hard work, mutual respect, and especially their shared love of music.

The story is told through the eyes of Luzita, a bubbly, lighthearted elderly housefly who quietly observes the families as they work together, share their traditions, face challenges, and form lasting friendships.

I had the opportunity to interview descendants of these families, who are now in their eighties and nineties, who shared stories of their childhood on the Colville Ranch.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the QR codes I've included throughout its pages. By scanning them, readers can actually hear parts of the interviews I had with some of these people who inspired my characters along with traditional songs that have been passed down through generations.

For me, Harvest and Harmony became much more than writing a book. It became a way of preserving a little piece of San Luis Valley history, honoring the families who lived it, and hopefully helping keep some of these traditions alive for future generations.

All net proceeds from the sale of Harvest and Harmony will be donated to support St. Francis of Assisi Mission and Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. The goal is to help preserve local history and support these communities.
